In Tommaso Traetta’s opera of 1772 drama and music are remarkably intertwined. Alongside Gluck’s reform operas Antigona stands for the departure from the rigid operatic forms.
The libretto is based on Sophocles’ tragedy, though the originally hopeless conflict is resolved in a provocative happy-end: the protagonists take different decisions an evade their fate. Novoflot portrays the well-known myth as open rivalry. The hesitation of the characters in the predetermined plot, their comical and simultaneously tragic efforts to gain position is overlapped by the self-presentation of the singers in front of the audience.
