With The 5th Season, Novoflot develop a music-theatrical exegesis of international carnival cultures. Carnival is an invention for otherworldly discourse, a way to express oneself beyond conventional rhetoric — to let today’s laughter be followed by tomorrow’s reflection, through mask and costume. The focal points of our carnival research are various music theater camps, where our different ensembles come together. These camps are real, highly political, and existential events. “Camp” refers, on the one hand, to camping — but also to an exaggerated perception of cultural products and political discussions. In times of international crises, The 5th Season becomes an artistic mouthpiece; it offers ways to move beyond paralysis and speechlessness, and to develop encouraging and courageous forms of expression within the framework of music theater discourse. It is complicated to express oneself politically. Even more difficult is coming together. This is a first attempt.
